A Poem

I have not originally composed this poem , I got it from Kamla Das’s writing, all of her writings, but especially when I studied the writing ‘An Introduction’ I was surprised because that’s how I feel, that is what I want to do and that is why I recomposed this poem of my own feelings and words.

She is essentially a poet of love and tenderness

She is aware of the world around her

And give the living expression to modern Indian women’s thoughts and feelings

There is a kind of restlessness in her poems

I am Indian

Very Brown

Born in Rampur

They say don’t speak English don’t write English

English is not my mother tongue, I know that

They don’t leave me alone

They are after me because I am different

They don’t like me because I am rebellious

They want me to be a good Indian lady

My womanliness dressing sarees

Be girl be wife they said

Be bright red peacock

Be a quarrel with servant, fit in

Don’t go out

Specially after seven

Good girls don’t love

Good girls don’t laugh around men

This is our society ladies and gentlemen

but I

I am an Indian lady

A lady who is Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswathi

We will speak up

We will fight for our rights

We will not let people decide our future

We will do whatever we want to do in our life

If I want to be a doctor, I’ll be a doctor

If I want to be a sex worker, I’ll be a sex worker

It is my life and I am not letting people decide what I am and what I have to do

An introduction of the new age Indian lady

A feminist, empowered and confident woman

Who lives her life by her choice

And who makes the world a better place to live.
