A Review on ‘The Folded Earth’ by Anuradha Roy

The Folded Earth is primarily one of those novels, which in this era has been portraying beautifully the condition of women, the oppressions they deal with and their identity in the society. The novels of this age usually deal with women as protagonists of the respective novels. The plot starts with a very remarkable way that is to make an impact on the readers in a great way. It starts with the view of a rural and remote area in the Himalayas. A young and beautiful girl residing there, being a widow decides to let go of her part and decides to provide her with a new beginning and new life when she decided to work and start independently. She starts teaching in a school and at night she starts drafting of a magnum opus  by her landlord. Her bond with her landlord grew stronger and along with that, her friendship with a remote village girl grew stronger at the same time. In the village called Ranikhet, with all these growing relationships, she decides to give herself a new life. Being a widow, she has always been the one deprived from all the luxuries of life since society being the source of obstruction all the time since  the time she has been widowed. Her decision of leaving everything behind and the search of happiness is what has primarily been portrayed in the novel. No matter, how deep and new relations has been made by her, her past with always remain the unforgettable to her. No matter she has been engaged n new relationships, no matter how happy she seems to be, there will always be the marks of the scars of the past she has been fighting to get rid of. So this novel is primarily a novel that deals with the fighting past and finding solace and solitude in nature. This novel made her to win the economist crossword award. This novel The Folded Earth has proved to be such a famous novel by Anuradha Roy that it got its nomination for many other awards such as Man Asia and also the Hindu Literary Award. Anuradha Roy’s first novel was also been very famous that it got nominated for many prestigious awards.

The novel The Folded Earth is all about simplicity, it is all about the drastic change that can take place in a women’s life when she learns to stand by her own. The novel also talks about what independence is, how necessary freedom is, for an individual. In the novel, the protagonist, Maya goes through all these phases in her life and the way she deals with the problems and brings about a change in her monotonous life is what the story of the novel all about. Since the time she is widowed, she fights with all the undesired circumstances of her life and get herself a life that she deserved. The protagonist in the novel has been disinherited by her father who is a pickle industrialist because she married a Christian, this shows the dominance of disagreements for inter-caste marriages . unfortunately her husband dies unexpectedly on one of his mountaineering expeditions which left her hopeless and sent her in complete solitude as she had no other person standing as a support beside her. Nor her father accepted her nor did she could have a way to feed her. Finally she decides to abandon the Deccan and move to a place where she could earn for her or at least do something to feed herself for a living. She abandons that place and moves to a nearby hill station named Ranikhet situated in the Himalayas. She shifts there and starts working for a living. Her first source of earning after visiting Ranikhet was teaching in a school. She chose teaching as her profession to earls a living. She starts teaching in a Christian school and the second thing she could do for a living was run the pickle factory of her father and bring success to it. While her stay in Ranikhet, she meets a number of people, number of citizens became her close ones among which an aristocrat named Diwan Sahib and a little educated and literate girl named Charu became very close to her and supported her throughout her living. Diwan Sahib and Charu are also the main characters in the novel. The plot proceeds in such a way that Charu falls in love with a young cook who she meets. But eventually she had to go to Delhi and then Maya turns out to be the one Charu started sharing everything about their love story and with the preceding story Maya became a part of their blossoming love story.  Later in the story, we see that Diwan Sahib’s nephew comes in the town and sets a business in the town which turns out as the business that created a huge amount of loss to Maya’s earnings. Maya then deals with this loss also. These are the small incidents which showed Maya’s efficiency in her own life.
