A Visit to TERI

“We travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us”

A trip to TERI Himalayan Centre in Mukhteshwar near Nainital was organized by Miss Bhavya Ahuja, Mr. Sahil Pathak and Dr Nikhil Rajput for some of the selected students of Centre for Social Innovation. Seventeen students gave their name but only seven were selected. The name of the programme was Rural Immersion and Social Entrepreneurship (RISE). RISE is a social development program of TERI developed under the broad outline of the Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojna of the Government of India .Seven Students and Three teachers went on the trip.

It was a four day trip which was from 27th May to 30th may. We were supposed to report between 4:30Am to 5:00Am on 27th morning. A journey is never said to be complete unless there arise some problems .We planned to visit Ramnagar by traveler but unfortunately plan changed at the last moment. Then we were asked to take cabs and reach Anand Vihar Bus Stand. We all decided to go there by bus. We started from there by 7:30Am.

“Good Company in a journey makes the way seem shorter”

Although seven of us were not all from the same courses but we came to know more about each other on this trip. We reached Ramnagar at around 2:00Pm. Our stay was at Regenta Resort Tarika. We were given the keys of our rooms. Girls were given separate rooms, which was the best amongst all. Then we all went to our rooms. We were called for having Lunch. Then we all visited kosi river which was quite near to the resort. Then we all jumped into the swimming pool. Sahil sir also joined us. We all enjoyed a lot. After that we had dinner. We sat in the garden for some time and then went back to our roomsA new day, new beginning, we all were full with enthusiasm ready to go on a Jungle Jeep Safari. We started from the resort by 5:30Am.We saw many animals like elephants, birds, heard of deer, monkeys and langoors but were unable to find most wanted Tiger. We felt we were so close to nature. We got a chance to visit “Sitabani” temple situated in Jim Corbett. It had a beautiful lake on one side and mountains on the other. We were really amused to see the beauty of the temple. We reached back to the resort by 9:30Am.We had our breakfast. Then we were asked to pack our bags. At around 12:00Am we were ready to leave for Mukhteshwar. We said Goodbye to the beautiful place and left to reach our destination. We reached there at around 3:00Pm.They showed us our rooms. We had our lunch. Then we went along with them to have a look of that place. We visited Hanuman temple. They arranged for bonfire and Musical night. It was the first time when I did all these things with my friends. We all danced our hearts out. Our teachers also danced along with us. It was really amazing. Then we had dinner. We all sat in one room and spoke to each other. It was the beautiful part of this trip. Then we all went to sleep.

A new day, a lot waiting for us. We woke up at 5:00Am and visited the Hanuman temple to see the sunrise. Then we came back and played basketball and badminton. We had our breakfast and left the place to visit TRISHA (TERI Research Initiatives at Supi for Himalayan Advancement). They told us about their initiatives which they have taken for the upliftment of local community and to generate ideas amongst the participants to take up social project that would meet the needs of villagers. They showed us their oil distillation unit. They have installed tanks of 25000 liters which are used to collect rainwater. They have implemented the concept of rainwater harvesting in a very impressive way. We saw their Herbal Garden. They took us for a visit to their Radio station “Kumaon Vani “-India’s Manthon Award Winning biggest community Radiostation. They told us how local people see it as a source to resolve their problems. Then we visited a temple few km’s away from Mukhteshwar. The weather was simply just awesome. It had started raining .We had Maggie and tea. Our next stop was “Chauli ki Jhali”. We experienced a beautiful view at Chauli ki Jhali, took a lot of pics and that moment to our fullest. Then we returned back to TERI, had tea and pakoras and then had Dinner and went to sleep.

Last day of the trip. We were quite sad but were excited too. We were to visit the village .We had our breakfast and were ready to leave .We reached the village at around 11:30Am. We were divided into two groups. We cooked food on Chula’s by ourselves. Village women helped us. Then we went the whole way down to bring water. It was very difficult for us but she was really good at it.Then we gave bath to cattle and cows. We sowed some seeds. It was a different experience all over. Village life is not at all easy. They face so many difficulties. Rain water harvesting is done in village itself. A computer center was set up there to make photocopying and printout easy for people. We had Lunch and then came back .We left the place by 4:00pm to reach Haldwaani from where we were to board our bus. The thing which I liked the most in this trip was late night talks with friends. Knowing about them and the beauty of nature .At one point it was sunny and on the other rainy. The kosi river was pleasing .The teachers were amazing as they were like our friends.

The most significant innovation which I saw was that the place where we stayed in Mukhteshwar was all under solar energy. Solar electricity and solar geysers were used. The technique of rain water harvesting was awesome.

We did boating in Bhimtal and then had dinner and boarded the bus at 10:30pm.We reached back Delhi at around 5:00Am I the morning and said goodbye to our teachers and friends.
