Studies show that approx. 10.6% of students of age 18 or above, pursuing higher education in India are suffering from a number of various psychological conditions like stress, anxiety, depression symptoms which eventually leads them towards various unhealthy habits and drug addictions. “MINDFULNESS” is an important practice that can curb out these problems once and for all, but is very under-rated and considered insignificant among colleges providing higher education to the students in India.

“Mindfulness can be defined as a practice to be fully present and aware of body, mind, feelings, and surrounding, and being not overly reactive or overwhelmed by whats going on.”

Hence, these are some ways that can easily help in implementing Mindfulness in the curriculum by bringing some very minor but important changes in your day to day life:-

TEACHING THE STUDENTS TO FOCUS ON A PARTICULAR TARGET;-

“FOCUS” is a very important factor in modern-day education system whether being in terms of studies or in terms of assessment and competition. Even Arjuna in MAHABHARATA had to focus on the bird’s eye in order to hit it with an arrow. In the same way in this modern education system, practicing “MINDFULNESS” can also help the students to achieve a steady state of mind as well as can help them to focus on their goals and achieve them.

Colleges should inculcate a MINDFULL class routine in their curriculum during the break time in which the students should be taught to focus on something specific around them or in their body. FOR EG.- Students should be taught to focus on their feet or on their breath during a brisk walking session or they should be told to focus on the ringing of a bell or on the wind blowing or on anything of their choice.

Hence, this completes the first stage of being “MINDFULL”.

MAKING THE STUDENTS TO NOTICE AND ACKNOWLEDGE THINGS DISTRACTING THEM:-

The trait of accepting their weaknesses and their faults and acknowledging them in a positive way has been one of the most important problems for students which even stops them from further improvement. The students should be taught how they can positively acknowledge their weaknesses and their thoughts and their sensations which are distracting them which can be any thought that went on in the past or that might be coming up in the future. This is actually the key of completing the second stage of being “MINDFULL” which refers to not being judgmental about anything they notice and label it as ’good’ or ‘bad’ and not being overly reactive and overwhelmed by whats going around them.

TEACHING THEM TO BRING THEIR FOCUS BACK TO THE TARGET:-

After acknowledging their weaknesses and their distractions, the students in the colleges should be taught as to how to convert their weaknesses into their strengths and how to not to get distracted by any means. They should be taught as to how to bring their focus back to their targets after acknowledging their distractions, to achieve their goals. Hence, this step concludes as the third and the last step of the practice of “MINDFULNESS”.
