No injustice to animals – a cessation of cruelty!
There was news of forty dead tiger cubs found in a freezer at a Thai Buddhist temple made outright headlines and grabbed the attention of many. The pictures gone viral on social media manifested those 40 dead cubs lined up on the floor which was indeed disturbing. It showed the world another of its darkest sides when the temple was accused of wildlife trafficking and animal abuse. It is not the first time that the world has witnessed a case like this. There have been thousands of instances where faultless animals are imprisoned and denied everything that is important to them including their lives.
As a matter of fact, it is well known that some humans even panic at the sight of an injection. How can it frighten someone so much! It’s just an injection, after all. Wonder how much the animals suffer in such aforementioned cases which cost them even their lives. But relax, there is no one forcing one upon you. Such a thing of joy it is and the realization
occurs once you observe what is called an animal testing.
Now let some light be thrown on animal testing and its consequences which is considered one of the most callous forms of animal cruelty. Animal cruelty basically means showing cruelty to animals in the simplest of its forms, be it throwing a pebble or inserting an injection for your own sake. Similarly, when such brutality is witnessed in laboratories, it is
known as animal testing. In recent years this practice has evolved and increased tremendously. Right now, there are millions of dogs, goats, rabbits, cats, mice and what not being chained inside desolate enclosures in laboratories across countries. They languish in pain, suffer from extreme frustration, ache with loneliness, and long to be free. But aren’t able enough to free themselves for they are animals? And animals have no right to live their own lives? They are our objects on which various researches and experiments can be carried out for we consider them to be our slaves? For their feelings
and sufferings are inferior to ours?
All these questions can undoubtedly be denied with the support of strong reasons. To begin with, it is a scientific truth that the body functioning of humans and animals contradict or react differently to most of the situations. As far as
statistics is concerned, almost 90% of the experiments that pass on animals, fail in humans. This shows that most of these tests are a mere wastage of money, time, energy, resources and most importantly the precious gift of Life.
Further, it is no stone age but an era where the advancements in various fields are prodigious. Then why conduct tests on the wrong species when sophisticated computer and mathematical models, human tissue and cell cultures and smarter, more focused clinical and epidemiological studies can show us more accurately what happens to human bodies with diseases. So, when there are alternatives why not favour them?
Another reason to defend it is that almost 95% of animals involved in experiments are given no protection and the drugs used are not necessarily safe. It is indeed expensive, time taking and also lead to the wastage of government resources as many experiments result in failure. It can also be misleading at times, as there are many tests that fail on animals
but work in case of humans. Apart from these points, it puts more weight on the fact that animal testing or cruelty
should not be practiced because of it being an unethical method. This process is not morally upright for it violates the rights of an animal. More importantly, the benefits to humanity that are bleak in nature and number can never justify the sufferings of animals.
The world is witnessing such arrogant practices time and again and it is indeed a high time to stop such cruelties and take sensible measures that would act in furtherance of living beings as a whole. Animal testing is being cruel to them at another deliberate level. They too have genuine feelings like humans but certainly not the same abilities in all. Humans
have been rated above animals for the intelligence that they possess along with their power to express which is unique. But because animals are sans these qualities, it can not be assumed that their life has no worth. If you do so, you are in disguise violating someone’s right to life. So, next time when you are about to use an eyeliner, mascara or any other cleaner take out a second to gaze at the kind of product you are using. You might be supporting animal cruelty and are still not aware of it. And so to say, “Not responding is also a response – we are equally responsible for what we don’t do”.
