Portrait of a Woman in Indian Television

Women wearing heavy sarees with heavy gold jewelry, holding a thaali containing fruits and flowers praying for her husband and his family’s welfare this is the portrait of typical Ideal women(bahu) in Indian Television.
There are many serials such as kyunki saas bhi kabhi bahu thi, kasauti zinda ki, bhabi, kumkum etc., who create the stereotypical image of Indian housewife. Each serial portrays that how an ideal wife, daughter in law, daughter and mother should fulfill their responsibilities towards their family, be it taking care of their family and children and how they should sacrifice for their family. If the women tries to work outside and feels independent, bold and smart then they shown in a negative light.

Despite discussions and debates on women issues in India, new serials are coming every month with a same topic. Where marriage is a important issue in Indian tradition culture where a women’s life is revolve around her husband’s and his family.
Now, here the issues arises:- what kind of images do these serials portray to the youths and the next generation? Do men have no role to play in their home? Are women have only strength to keep her family together?

Where Indian serials playing no role in women empowerment however, there seems to be a change in Indian reality shows such as big boss, roadies, dance India dance Indian idol etc., where women are emerging with a great array of talents be it singing, dancing or challenging themselves. Where women seems to be more aggressive, assertive and competent but with all these qualities they couldn’t win as most of the reality shows based on voting system where people end up supporting a boy.

According to me, serials should be more realistic and not to portray the false image of womenhood as there are many issues and sides to a women personality which need to be highlighted. These type of stereotypical serials directly effects to our next generation and shows women as a weaker and reserved sex.
