Many programs have been implemented and run by the government such as International Women’s Day, Mother’s Day, etc in order to bring awareness in the society about the true rights and value of the women the development of the nation. Women need to be progressed in the number of spheres. There is a high level of gender inequality in India where women are ill treated by their family members and outsiders. The percentage of illiterate population in India is mostly covered by the women. The real meaning of women empowerment is to make them well educated and leave them free so that they can be capable to make their own decisions in any field. From equal status with men in ancient times through the low points of the medieval period, to the promotion of equal rights by many reformers, the history of women in India has been eventful. In modern India, women have held high offices in India including that of the President, Prime Minister, Speaker of the Lok Sabha and Leader of the opposition.

However, women in India continue to face atrocities such as rape, acid throwing, dowry killings, forced prostitution of young girls. According to a global poll conducted by Thomson Reuters, India is the fourth most dangerous country in the world for women. India needs to take some advance steps to improve the women positions in the society through the proper health, higher education and economic participation. Education is the mandatory condition in this subject. Being educated of every class woman will lead them on the path of progress. There is a provision in the law for the protection of women but most women are not aware of them. Those who are aware of such things also hesitate to use them. Today, in contrast to the past centuries, we find women literate, educated, and liberated to lead. We find their surge forward not only in the political front, but also in social life where they act as agents of change contributing to economic development as well.
